Use advice for data set The LCI data set should be used for LCI/ LCA studies where TDI is used along the production chain. TDI is mainly used in the manufacture of flexible polyurethane foams used in upholstery, mattresses and automotive seats. Other uses for TDI include polyurethane elastomers and coatings.

Data set use approval

General comment The main data source was a data collection from European producers of TDI. Primary data on gate-to-gate TDI production is derived from site-specific information for processes under operational control supplied by the participating companies of this study. Four different TDI producers with plants in three different European countries participated in the primary data collection. 90% of the European TDI production (EU-27) in 2010 is covered. The data for the upstream supply chain until the precursors are taken from the GaBi Database'11 of the software system GaBi 5. For the most relevant intermediate to the TDI process in terms of environmental aspects (dinitrotoluene), a confirmation of the quality of the data and its industrial representativeness was provided by the participating member companies. Mass allocation was applied for the production process of TDI as hydrogen chloride (HCl 100%) results as co-product.
